“Seriously?! A Backpacker Bus? What’s that?”
“We are like a Hop on Hop off Tour Bus. But we cater to travellers and backpackers”
“Like the ones in London and Sydney? They are so convenient to travel around”
“Yes, except that we are bigger, better and do longer tours.”
“So you run your own buses?”
“Yes, kind of “
“But I can travel really cheap, all by myself. Why pay so much?”
“Yes, but try travelling to all the places we go to and try experiencing everything that we do – all by yourself”
“It is insane enough to quit a job to be an entrepreneur. But why this business? “
“Because it is fun doing it. And because we think India needs this.”
We get asked these set of questions so frequently that our responses roll off the tongue even before we know it. For a country that is slowly waking up to the idea of slow travel as against conducted tours, a backpacker bus is an alien concept. Heck, even our parents do not understand what we are up to. So we thought it is time to debunk a few questions about our profession.
So what are we really?
We are goMowgli – India’s first flexible bus network for travellers.
Sounds fanciful. What does it mean?
We in goMowgli provide a network of buses, for travellers and backpackers to travel around. And we are starting with Karnataka. With a pass on goMowgli, you can travel around Karnataka in its entirety. You can hop off anywhere you want to and hop back on whenever you want to on the next available goMowgli bus. What ‘s more, you can stay overnight wherever you want to and we will drop you and pick you up from the nearest location. Of course, we will help you with accommodation if you do not have one.
Sounds convenient. But how is it any different from any of the tour buses?
Well, we are not a run of the mill tour bus. When you travel with us, we take you around to make sure you experience authentic Indian experiences. History walks, Market tours, Bird watching, Rock climbing, Local street food and all that. And you can travel slow and easy with us. Once you start travelling with us, you have 6 months to complete you pass. Which means, you can hop off and on as many times as you want. No – you can travel along each leg only once.
But I think I can still use the local buses and travel around. Can’t I?
Well, you can. Nothing beats using local transport in a foreign location. However, travel in India on local transport is not necessarily fun, always. Especially to the off beat places we take you to. Try hitching on a local bus to & from Tadiandamol or Mullaiyangiri and you will know what we mean. What we offer is a comfortable transport to offbeat locations and guided services all along the way. And we have some really cool guides on board the bus.
The idea from goMowgli is born out of a desire to enable travellers to travel around India in a flexible and convenient manner. The backpacker bus is a concept that has been in existence for a while in many mature travel markets, with considerable success. We in goMowgli want to replicate the same in India. We believe that day is not far when you will be able to travel every inch of India on a single goMowgli pass with goMowgli.
